Bullitt

Bullitt, a sport bar/restaurant in Nob Hill, was the location for a get together with friends a few weeks ago. Their drinks are reasonably priced but what really caught my eye was their tater tot and mac & cheese selections. Who remembers tater tots from elementary school hot lunches? They get a full make over here at Bullitt. There are a few different tot choices including Totchos, which are basically nachos with all the toppings minus the tortilla chips and replaced with tater tots. DROOL! Tatchos are a perfectly sinful compliment to a nice cold beer. The Mission Mac & Cheese is also a delicious eat. It’s cheesy, rich mac & cheese with tater tots, bacon, fried onions and topped with a fried egg. All in all, I would recommend Bullitt if you’re ok with indulging yourself to some oh so good but oh so bad food.

Dine About Town

If you’re in the San Francisco area, you should definitely check out Dine About Town. A bunch of local restaurants have gotten together to give foodies a chance to try out their food without breaking the bank. Restaurants that participate in DAT have set menus and prices for a two course lunch ($17.95) and/or a three course dinner ($34.95).

I suggest doing some research on Yelp about what restaurants might be worth checking out. I personally like to go to restaurants that might normally be out of my price range…it just sounds like the best deal to me.

Last year, I went to Chez Papa Bistrot, Fringale, and Luce, all of which are participating again this year. This year, I’ve made reservations at Cliff House, 5A5, Luella, and Chapeau. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Absinthe Brasserie & Bar

This was a second stop on a night out with some friends in the city this past weekend. Although Absinthe Brasserie and Bar is a full service restaurant, my friends and I only stopped by for some drinks. (The wait for a table was about an hour!) And of course, I felt it wouldn’t be right if we came to Absinthe and didn’t try the drink that made them famous. It’s a strong drink, about 55% alcohol, but considering the alcohol content, it’s not too bad to drink. Absinthe is served by placing a sugar cube on a slotted spoon and slowly dissolved with cold water. If you like black licorice, you’ll love absinthe. I thought it was enjoyable but it didn’t do as much drunken damage as I thought it would. But that wasn’t a problem since we order a few more drinks from our totally cute bartender. :P The bar is also famous for their soft pretzels, served hot with a creamy cheddar dipping sauce. This is definitely a fun hang out spot and I’ll definitely be coming back to try their food.

Chicken Salsa Chili

2 large jars of Safeway Select Southwest Salsa, hot
1 can of corn
1 can of black beans
1 medium onion
1 packet of taco seasoning
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
3 chicken breasts or thighs

Optional: sour cream, cheese, chives, avocados, hot sauce, tortilla chips

Chop the onion and combine it with the salsa, corn, black beans, taco seasoning, Worcestershire sauce and chicken in the crock pot. Set the crock pot on high and cook for about 6 hours.

After 6 hours, pull out the chicken and pull the meat apart with 2 forks. The meat should shred without too much effort. Put the chicken back in the crock pot and cook with the salsa mix for at least one more hour.

Set the crock pot to warm. Serve with your favorite chili/taco toppings.

This is a great, simple recipe that is prefect for serving large groups of people. I’m not sure exactly how many it can serve, but I think about 8 servings. My roommates love it when I make them this chili. If you’re going for a healthier option, I recommend using chicken breasts, but the thigh meat is much juicier and flavorful, in my opinion. Also, a friend of mine, who actually gave me this recipe, has said that she has thrown in frozen chicken breast and it cooked just fine, which is great for those times when you don’t have time to defrost the meat.

I can also see this being a fun cooking project to do with children. It’s so easy to do! They can easily help put together all the components. I hope you enjoy and please feel free to leave me a message on the tab on the right. :)

Have a tasty day!

January - Crock pot
For the month of January, I will be trying out recipes for my good old crock pot. Some may say it’s old fashion, but I say they’re wrong! I recently purchased my first crock pot and I’m amazed at how versatile this little cooking device is. Delicious, hearty meals that are so easy to make! Now, I must warn you, if you’re coming home after work at 6pm and want to whip up a quick dinner, the crock pot is not the ideal method of cooking. Crock pot meals usually take at least a few hours to prepare, so definitely plan ahead. I usually like to throw together a meal early in the morning before work or late in the evening before I go to bed.
So this month, I’ll be sharing 4 recipes using this nifty and new favorite kitchen tool. January is the month of the crock pot!

52 Food Experiments

Welcome to my new photo/food project for 2012. Cooking has always been a hobby of mine as well as taking photos, so I thought it would be a good idea to put them together. This year, I will be posting pictures and recipes every week with different food themes every month. Some of the recipes I’m sharing will be ones that I’ve tried and love. Some recipes will be new and challenging and I’ll be posting my cooking adventures whether they’re a success or not. Hopefully I can get some feedback and share tips on making good recipes GREAT. :)
